WVC Knight's Hall of Fame 2005
"A KNIGHT TO REMEMBER" Wenatchee Valley College celebrated its first annual Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony, A Knight to Remember, on Saturday, May 14, 2005 at the Red Lion Hotel. Approximately 140 guests attended the ceremony, which featured inductions of past WVC athletes and special induction to coach Jim Cannon, a community support award, a no-host bar and dinner, and guest speakers Marv and Dave Harshman.Former WVC student athletes who were inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame include Paul Seale (football), Santa Maria Rivera (men's soccer), Jayme Duncan (women's fastpitch), Matt Hampton (baseball), the Women's 1978-1979 Basketball Team and the Men's 1995-1996 Basketball Team. A special induction was given to Jim Cannon, WVC assistant women's basketball coach and economics and history faculty member. Jim has been the assistant women's basketball coach for nearly 30 years. The college has retired jersey #2 with his name on it and will hang it in Smith Gymnasium. During Jim's induction, Marco Azurdia, dean of student development and athletics director, said that coaches Sollars and Stamps and himself "talked about the effect Coach Cannon has had on the program and more importantly on the lives of the Lady Knights who have played there." Bob Rust received the community support award in honor of Ted Anthon, who passed away about five years ago. Marco described Anthon as a "loyal and devoted fan [who] supported us unconditionally." Rust is the general manager of Weinstein Beverage and a 1969 graduate of WVC.Guest speakers at the induction were Marv and Dave Harshman. Marv Harshman has been the men's basketball coach at the University of Washington and Washington State. His son Dave Harshman is the head basketball coach at Pacific Lutheran University. Special thanks were also given to community supporters at the ceremony. A Brief History About the Inductees Paul Seale enrolled at Wenatchee Junior College in 1959. That year, his team won the Northwest Junior College Championship crown with an undefeated season. Seale finished the 1960 season with 40 receptions, five touchdowns, and 542 yards gained. He was the league all-conference end, garnered the 1960 Team Inspirational Player Award, and was also selected as a first team All American right end. He was selected to play in the East-West Junior College All Star Game in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He went on to play for the Oregon State Beavers and British Columbia Lions. He later became a coach at Corvallis High School, Wenatchee Valley College and the Eastmont School District. He retired from teaching in 2001, but has coached football at the high school and junior high levels since his retirement. He is currently the defensive coordinator for the Wenatchee Valley Rams Football Club and will take on the same duties for the Eastmont Wildcats team this fall. This was Seale's second hall of fame induction; in 1988 he was inducted into the Men's Fastpitch Hall of Fame as an umpire after many years of officiating softball and baseball. Inductee Matt Hampton's baseball career began at Wenatchee High School, where he helped the Panthers to a second-place baseball championship finish in 1995. In 1996 he began pitching for the Wenatchee Valley College Knights. His pitching record and offensive numbers earned him the Eastern Region Co-Most Valuable Player award. Following his successful season at WVC, Hampton accepted a baseball scholarship to the University of Washington. As a Husky he was selected as Pac-10 North Pitcher of the Week. In 1997 he earned the North Central Washington sports award, College Male Athlete of the Year. He graduated with a sociology degree from the U.W. and later became an assistant baseball coach at Spokane Community College before joining the Chilocothe Paints in Ohio in 2001. One year later he was signed by the San Diego Padres and assigned to the Alabama Bears, and has since been promoted to the Portland Beavers. He reports this spring for his assignment in the 2005 season. In the off-season, he is pursuing a master's degree in business at Gonzaga University. Inductee Jayme Duncan was the catalyst leading the Lady Knights' softball team to two straight NWAAC Softball Championship tournaments. As a freshman, she was named to the National FastPitch Coaches All American Team, which recognized her as one of the three best outfielders in the NWAACC. She was a two-time all eastern region selection, and graduated as a member of the President's List, which is the highest academic honor attainable at WVC, two years in a row. Duncan's career statistics include a .423 batting average, 102 career hits, 89 runs scored and 72 stolen bases. Santa Maria Rivera played midfield for the WVC soccer team and led the Knights with 24 goals and 24 assists in only 18 games. He was named All League for his efforts. After only one year at WVC he was recruited to Seattle University, where he switched to defense for the Redhawks. This past year Rivera helped lead the Redhawks to the Men's Division II Soccer Championship. For his efforts, he was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player in the championship tournament and was named to the all tournament team. Rivera is a junior at Seattle University and his major is in history with a Spanish minor. |
